The Integration of Religious Education into Public Policy:: Facing Diversity

This study examines Religious Education as a process for integrating public policies adopted in response to the cultural and religious diversity that exists in the country. It considers the historical development of the subject, the various movements of reform and counter-reform, as well as the current situation. In this regard, it examines the practice and pedagogical methods of Religious Education in state schools and how these facilitate the development of religious diversity among pupils. The aim is to investigate the curricular, methodological and socio-political factors associated with Religious Education in schools, taking into account the religious diversity of pupils, and to reflect on teachers' conceptions of Religious Education and their teaching practices within a diverse classroom. Schools should deliver this subject in a non-proselytising manner, providing pupils with a multidisciplinary, democratic education and fostering religious tolerance in the classroom.
