the international legal framework for rights of indigenous peoples

This book provides a description and analysis of the issue of indigenous peoples' rights under international law, applying it to the specific situation of the indigenous peoples of Canada and French Guiana, particularly with regard to collective rights. This project therefore forms part of a broader endeavour to analyse the impact of the international recognition of indigenous peoples on their situations within their respective states, on the recognition of their rights and, more specifically, on the recognition of collective rights - which will be at the heart of this work as fundamental rights that affect the various other rights of indigenous peoples. Over the past 25 years, the rights of indigenous peoples have gradually taken on an increasingly important role in international human rights debates, which has, in turn, led to a significant shift towards the recognition of these rights. Three institutions have taken a particular interest in this issue: the United Nations, the Organisation of American States and the International Labour Organisation.
