The Irk

Manchester buried the River Irk more than a century ago. It still runs beneath Victoria Station, under the concourse and the glass roof, through brick darkness the city chose to forget. In 1964, Arthur Bell walked into the railway social club beneath the station for his eighteenth birthday and was never seen again. The men responsible for what happened that night later surfaced in the Irwell, one by one, in a state the river could not explain. The file said missing, believed absconded. The file was lying. Now Callum Reed, eighteen years old and newly signed to the railway, has vanished within sight of the same station. When the river gives him back, the pathology is wrong. The trace on him belongs not to open water but to somewhere closed and old: brick dust, mould, the residue of a cellar no one has poured a pint in for sixty years.
