The Island of Black Waters (Kala Pani)

The Island of Black Waters (Kala Pani) is the autobiographical account of Hadrat Maulana Muhammad Jafar Thanseri Sahib, recording his arrest in the 1860s, prosecution by the British colonial authorities, sentence of death, commutation to transportation for life, and long years of confinement in the Andaman Islands.Written after his return, the narrative follows the author from the search of his home and attempted flight through arrest, interrogation, trial, imprisonment at Ambala and Lahore, transportation through Karachi and Bombay, and finally his arrival at Port Blair. It records prison conditions, hard labour, colonial judicial proceedings, relations among prisoners and officials, family separation, marriage and domestic life in Andaman, and the circumstances surrounding his eventual release.Throughout the memoir, Thanseri interprets his experiences through Qur'anic teaching, prayer, patience, divine decree, repentance, and trust in Allah.
