The Key Between Us

Pete Holloway has one rule, and nobody on earth knows about it.He's twenty-four, first-year law, and for three years he's kept a promise to himself he's never said out loud to another living soul. It isn't a kink. It's the only thing in his life that has never once let him down. Then the housing office hands him Mitch Donovan.Former Division I safety. Six foot three. Straight - obviously, unmistakably, and so relentlessly kind about it that Pete could scream. Mitch carries Pete's entire bedroom up two flights of stairs on the first day and never asks to be thanked. He drags Pete to the gym at 5:45 in the morning. He learns how Pete takes his coffee without being told. And on an empty gym floor the week before Thanksgiving, he notices something he was never supposed to see.He doesn't laugh. He just asks questions.By the end of that week Mitch is holding Pete's key - as a favor, as a joke, as a problem he can solve. By Christmas, Pete has stopped counting down the days until he gets it back, and started counting how many more he can give.Neither of them has a word for what's happening. Pete has been out since college. Mitch has never once had to think about it. And for a while, no word at all is fine - better than fine. Then the rumor reaches campus, and it turns out there's a word after all.Mitch and his bitch.Four words in a hallway. And everything two men built without ever naming it starts coming apart - because Mitch Donovan can fix anything except the one thing he cannot say out loud, and Pete has spent his entire life believing that being tolerated is as much as anyone gets.A slow-burn M/M romance about control, trust, and the terrifying business of being known.Roommates to lovers - Slow burn - Bi awakening - Forced proximity - Touch-starved - Hurt/comfort - Closed doorOne bathroom. Four hundred and fifty square feet. Thirty-four days of unbearable politeness.HEA guaranteed. No cheating. No cliffhanger. Closed-door intimacy - all of the tension, none of the explicit detail.
