the Ladder of Cognition: From Bacteria to Übermensch

How did mind arise from matter-and where is it headed next? In The Ladder of Cognition: From Bacteria to the Übermensch, Michael Shilman presents a bold, unified framework for understanding the evolution of mind, agency, and meaning. Bridging biology, neuroscience, philosophy, and cognitive science, the book traces a continuous ascent from the simplest forms of biological responsiveness to human thought-and toward the emerging realities of artificial intelligence. Rejecting both reductionism and mysticism, Shilman shows how increasingly complex forms of cognition arise through natural processes, offering a new perspective on consciousness and its role in survival. As intelligent machines advance, the author contends that evolution did not stop with us. Humanity may now be participating in the next major transformation of cognition itself. Understanding how we got here is the essential foundation for understanding where we-and the minds we are creating-are going. Rigorous yet accessible, The Ladder of Cognition offers a new way of thinking about mind, consciousness, meaning, and the future of intelligence itself.
