During the celebrations following Caesar's departure, Scaeva, a young Briton living under the protection of Epona, a Celtic goddess, enrages the powerful king of a neighbouring tribe and must face justice as decreed by the druids-five bloody prophecies about his future are foretold.To escape his fate, Scaeva is offered by his tribe to Caesar as a hostage, in a pact that would ensure the Romans a successful invasion the following year. Sent to Rome for his education at the house of Caesar's daughter Julia, wife of Pompey the Great, disaster strikes, and the first prophesy unfolds. Meanwhile, back in Britannia, Caesar's second invasion ends in personal grief and shattered dreams.
