The Living Earth: How Damaged Landscapes Recover

The Living Earth is a short book about damaged landscapes and the human work of repair.Across rivers, soils, forests, coasts, reefs, rangelands, and recovering animal populations, it explores a simple but powerful question: what allows life to return when a living system has been broken? These are not stories of easy optimism. The North Aral Sea has not fully recovered. The Loess Plateau is not an untouched landscape. Beavers do not fix every river. Mangroves do not return by planting alone. Knepp is not a model for every estate. But each case shows something important: damaged places are not always finished places. Where the broken process is understood, and where people organise themselves around the conditions life needs, restoration can begin. This book is about ecological agency: the human capacity to recognise a broken living relationship and act responsibly around its repair. It is not a promise that the Earth is healed. It is evidence that responsibility still works.
