Bol When Latin America becomes a news selection category for the Brazilian journalism industry, it is pointing to the exotic, sensational or negative aspects of the region. This book, the result of a master's thesis defended at ECA-USP, investigates the factors that give little qualitative and quantitative space to Latin America in the mainstream press. The study is based on two axes: the socio-historical environment and the journalistic environment. It is at the intersection of these fields that the scenario of Latin America's isolation is constructed. The research demonstrates that the Latin American continent is divided, by historical processes, into what I define as "Official Latin America" and "Popular Latin America". The mainstream press is the ideological apparatus of "Official Latin America", just as the alternative press is that of "Popular Latin America". The myth of impartiality is dismantled, and it is concluded that for Latin America not to be condemned to isolation, it is necessary to develop and study Latin American social movements, including their communication processes.
