"I'm standing just inside the door of a vacant old building, here with my realtor. I'm thinking of buying this place. How's that for a thrilling start to a detective story? A bit unorthodox, I know. These stories usually begin with a bang, sometimes literally. Maybe I should have started with the ex-porn stars, the naked photos, the murders, or with me, in my new work as a private investigator, being knocked unconscious with a blow to the back of the head-cold-cocked, as the tough guys call it. That last one happens about halfway through the story. I know who did it, and you will, too, and it certainly would be a more thrilling beginning-for you, though not for me. Even the memory of it makes my head hurt..."Meet Daniel Sentso, thirty-eight years of age, recently released from certain legal obligations, and also recently the benefactor of a substantial legal settlement. With a new life before him, Daniel ends up in the small town of Hadleyburg, NY. Suddenly free and wealthy, whatever should he do with himself? As it so happens, there were two items on his list of lifelong dreams. The first was a boyhood dream of owning a downtown building and being a landlord. Then there was the other thing: With every mystery and detective novel read, he always joked to himself, "Yeah, I could see myself doing that. In another life, I would definitely be a P.I." With the dreamed-of old building purchased, what does he find down the darkened hallway of the 4th floor? It's a long-abandoned private investigator's office with the P.I.'s name written on the pebbled glass of the old 1930's door. Well, why not? Why not scrape that name off, have his own inscribed, obtain his license, and thus indulge his two lifelong dreams at the same time? Then comes the fateful day: his very first client knocks on the door. It's Margot Madley, a drop-dead gorgeous ex-porn star. She comes with a murdered husband, a web of lies to spin, and a lonely, clueless neophyte P.I. to put to her own uses, or so she supposes. But there's more to Daniel Sentso than meets the eye. He may be a novice P.I., but he's nobody's fool, and he does nothing by half-measure...
