This book recounts the life of Zhang Xuecheng, a renowned ancient Chinese thinker, historian, and local gazetteer scholar. Despite a life of extreme poverty, he resolutely refused to seek a lucrative county magistrate post and instead remained steadfastly committed to the cause of literature and history. He lectured at prestigious academies including Dingwu Academy in Dingzhou, Jingsheng Academy in Yongping, and Lianchi Academy in Baoding, emphasizing inspiration, value, and questioning, and developed a comprehensive and systematic theoretical framework for historiography and local gazetteer compilation. His major works, General Principles of Literature and History and General Principles of Bibliography and Textual Criticism, synthesized ancient wisdom and established his own distinctive school of thought. In Chinese cultural history, following Confucius's "Spring and Autumn style," he proposed the important theory of the "principle of writing and editing." He compiled as many as sixteen local gazetteers, and his theories on gazetteer compilation have had a profound influence on the field both in China and internationally. Liang Qichao hailed him as the "sage of local gazetteers," and he is regarded worldwide as a highly influential international cultural figure.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿
