One of the most beloved of the medieval treatises in praise of Our Lady, the Mirror of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Speculum Beatae Mariae Virginis) is a sustained meditation upon the Angelical Salutation. Phrase by phrase it takes up the greeting the Archangel Gabriel brought to Nazareth - Ave, gratia plena, Dominus tecum - and unfolds from each word the dignities and praises of the Mother of God: her fullness of grace, the meanings of her name, the Lord who is with her, her blessedness among women, and the blessed Fruit of her womb. For centuries the work was ascribed to Saint Bonaventure, the Seraphic Doctor, and it is printed among his works; it is offered here under that venerable attribution, with a note on its authorship by Conrad of Saxony. Presented complete and unabridged, in the translation of Sister Mary Emmanuel, O.S.B.
