The MUSCOVY ~ Duck That Is Not a Duck: Ancient Bird Forages, Produces Eggs and Meat, Barely Makes Sound

Discover the strange, quiet, surprisingly capable bird that has been hiding in plain sight.THE MUSCOVY: The Duck That Is Not a Duck is a practical and engaging guide to one of the most unusual domestic birds in the world. Unlike most familiar ducks, the Muscovy is not descended from the mallard. It belongs to a separate lineage, was domesticated in the Americas long before European contact, and still carries many of the instincts of its wild forest ancestors.Quiet, strong, adaptable, and remarkably useful, Muscovies can forage for insects, produce large eggs, grow into substantial meat birds, hatch and raise their own young, and thrive without requiring a large pond. For homesteaders, small farmers, and backyard poultry keepers, they offer a fascinating combination of independence and practicality.Inside this book, you'll learn about: - The Muscovy's origin, history, and pre-Columbian domestication- Why Muscovies are so different from ordinary domestic ducks- Housing, feeding, water, fencing, and predator protection- Raising Muscovies for eggs and meat- Natural breeding, broodiness, incubation, and duckling care- Their exceptional foraging habits and role in orchards and gardens- Why Muscovies are so quiet compared with other ducks- Managing flight, strong claws, large drakes, and hidden nests- Health, manure management, and year-round flock care- Building a self-replacing and more sustainable flockThis is not a romanticized account of an effortless bird. Muscovies can fly over fences, turn water into mud, hide nests in impossible places, and reproduce more enthusiastically than expected. What makes them valuable is not perfection, but the way their ancient instincts can still work beautifully on a modern homestead.Whether you are considering your first flock or simply fascinated by unusual poultry, THE MUSCOVY offers a clear, practical look at the bird that forages, produces eggs and meat, raises its own young, and barely makes a sound.
