'Ideally, at the end of this process, we would be able to tell European consumers: 'Wherever you are in the European Union and wherever you shop, the situation remains the same; your fundamental rights remain unchanged'' (European Commission Green Paper of 1 July 2010). European legislation covers many legal areas, ranging from the protection of our fundamental rights to competition rules. The idea of specific legislation governing consumer relations with traders within the European Union, regardless of their country of origin, is proving increasingly necessary, forming part of the logical evolution of the EU's economic, legal and social policy.
