Three decades in the making-editors Westcott and Hort began their work in 1853 and did not publish till 1881-this critical text, correcting errors made by the original scribes, was painstakingly assembled from four different kinds of source material; Syrian, also known as Byzantine, the newest; Western, considered somewhat less reliable; Alexandrian, the most elegant; and what the editors called "Neutral," dating from the 4th century.
