the Painter of Clouds: Or: slow and costly education a man who knew everything about art except what it cost.

Gabriel Soares is Paris's most feared art critic - twelve books, a reputation built on other people's courage, and an empty space on his wall he hasn't filled in twenty-one years. When his oldest friend dies and leaves him seven boxes in a Brooklyn warehouse with one instruction - open them in person - Gabriel discovers that the man who knew him best had spent thirty-five years writing down everything Gabriel refused to see about himself. What follows is the story of a brilliant, carefully defended man who runs out of places to hide: three weeks in Brooklyn with a painter's ghost and an eighty-two-year-old keeper of eight-word truths, two winters in a house at the edge of Portugal, and the slow, costly, necessary education of someone who spent a lifetime describing courage and must now find out if he has any. The Painter of Clouds is for anyone who has ever confused precision with living - and suspected, too late or just in time, that the difference matters.
