the PATH WE DID NOT CHOOSE: From Mandate to Produce Challenge of Becoming Another Species

What if the path we have followed all our lives was never truly chosen by us?From childhood, we are taught to follow a familiar route: study, work, produce, consume, compete, retire. We are told that success lies somewhere along that road. But what happens when technology, artificial intelligence, automation, and the transformation of human life begin to make that traditional path obsolete? The Path We Did Not Choose is a thought-provoking exploration of the invisible systems that have shaped our lives-and of the extraordinary moment humanity is now entering.Jairo Vargas examines how education, work, economic structures, technology, artificial intelligence, and the pursuit of progress have influenced not only what we do, but also what we believe we are supposed to become. As machines increasingly take over tasks once considered exclusively human, an unavoidable question emerges: If work no longer defines our existence, what will? The book moves beyond technology to explore an even deeper transformation: the possibility of enhanced bodies, extended minds, transhumanism, and a future in which humanity may have to reconsider the very meaning of being human.Yet this is not simply a book about the future. It is a reflection on freedom, dignity, inequality, purpose, consciousness, and choice.Technology may give us unprecedented power to transform the world-and ourselves. But power alone cannot tell us what kind of future is worth creating.Perhaps the greatest opportunity before us is not simply to build more intelligent machines or more capable human beings, but to finally recognize the path we inherited, question where it is taking us, and consciously decide where we want to go next.Because the route truly becomes ours only when we are able to see it-and choose it.
