A People's Fortress is a book by Jackson Dillon Palmer that examines the history, development, and relative success of each of the Soviet Socialist Republics that made up the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), as well as the numerous Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics that existed within them. The book explores the political, economic, social, and cultural development of these republics and considers the different ways in which they functioned within the larger Soviet system. Rather than viewing the Soviet Union solely as a single centralized state, A People's Fortress examines the individual republics and autonomous regions that formed the vast and diverse union. It considers their achievements, struggles, differences, and relationships with the central Soviet government while evaluating how successfully each republic developed during the Soviet era. The book also looks beyond the Soviet period. It examines what happened to the peoples, territories, governments, and economies of the former Soviet republics following the collapse of the USSR in 1991. By comparing conditions before and after the dissolution of what the book describes as the "People's Fortress," Palmer seeks to provide a broader understanding of the Soviet experiment, its legacy, and the lasting impact it had on the nations and peoples that once formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
