the poetical works of Janet Little, Scotch milkmaid

A hush settles over the Scottish hills, broken only by the soft cadence of verse shaped by hands accustomed to toil and hearts attuned to nature's quiet splendour. From the fields and byres of rural Ayrshire emerges a singular voice, weaving together the rhythms of daily life and the enduring beauty of the land. This collection stands as a rare testament to the power of poetry born not in scholarly halls, but in the open air, where the language of the people mingles with the music of the countryside. The poems gathered here capture the essence of 18th century Scotland, their lines rich with the Scots dialect and the earthy candour of a milkmaid's perspective. Each piece is infused with a pastoral sensibility, offering glimpses into the joys and hardships of rural existence, the fleeting changes of season, and the subtle interplay between tradition and individuality. The collection's author, one of the few celebrated women poets of her era, brings a unique clarity and warmth to her observations, illuminating the overlooked corners of Scottish literary heritage. For those who cherish historical Scottish poems, the verses offer more than simple nostalgia; they invite the reader to experience a vanished world through the eyes of someone who lived its realities. The collection's blend of rural Scottish literature and British women's poetry provides an invaluable window into both the artistry and the resilience found in everyday life. Lovers of scottish poetry and collectors of scots dialect poetry will find much to admire in the honest lyricism and gentle wit that pervade these works.
