The Polish Buccaneer: A Captain Alexander Portka Mystery

It is the 18th century West Indies at a time when various European nations are vying for property and wealth. Our protagonist, Captain Alexander Portka, once a trusted agent of the British crown, now finds himself trying to eke out a living as a third-rate sea captain due to an unfortunate incident on a prior mission for the crown. His once British handler, who is now the Deputy Governor of Port Royale, approaches him with a mission that he cannot refuse if he ever wishes to return to England. He is to not only recover a chest that mysteriously vanished under lock and key, but also ensure its replacement reaches the agent on the island of Guadeloupе. The mission is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of the Governor's daughter whom he must safeguard. Grave mishap and murder befall the passengers and crew in the vessel during its voyage. It will take all of Captain Portka's intellect, prowess, and sobriety not only to complete his mission but to safeguard his life and the lives of the other passengers.
