Bol This work arises from a number of questions raised during the course of academic training, in light of the problems faced by surplus workers, especially during the internship experience carried out at the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration - Vieira Ferreira Neto Penitentiary (SEAP-FN), from September 2006 to March 2008. Its objective is to contribute to the debate and reflection on the prison system, focusing on the theme of labour subordinated to the process of capital accumulation, the growing criminalisation of the surplus population and the overexploitation of prison inmates' labour. The difficulties of entering the formal labour market, the criminalisation suffered by these individuals in their alternative means of subsistence, the absence of a prison policy, the overexploitation of living labour and the related reproduction of the surplus population, aggravated by the offensive of capital and neoliberal ideology, aroused my interest in a critical understanding of the meaning and functions of prison in capitalist society.
