The Prog Metal Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Progressive in 60+ Bands

Progressive metal is one of the most technically ambitious and emotionally serious genres in rock music - and one of the least well documented. This guide covers more than sixty bands across nine chapters: the foundational acts who built the genre's vocabulary, the cult favorites who pushed it into stranger territory, the modern voices extending it globally, and the instrumental tradition that strips it down to pure structure. Each entry explains what a band does, why it matters, and where to start - without assuming prior knowledge, and without talking down to listeners who already know the genre well. The book also includes profiles of fourteen key figures who shaped the sound - among them John Petrucci, Danny Carey, Steven Wilson, Mikael Åkerfeldt, and Maynard James Keenan - and eight curated listening paths for readers who want a guided route through the catalog.Whether you are new to progressive metal or you have been listening for twenty years and want to fill the gaps, this is a map of the genre that is honest about what it leaves out and direct about what it recommends.Only SOME of bands covered include: Tool - Dream Theater - Opeth - Porcupine Tree - Meshuggah - Fates Warning - Symphony X - Pain of Salvation - Karnivool - Haken - Leprous - TesseracT - Soen - Riverside - Gojira - Between the Buried and Me - Ne Obliviscaris - Animals as Leaders - Ayreon - Rush - King Crimson - Yes - Queensrÿche - Voivod - Cynic - Savatage - Ark - Threshold - Evergrey - Katatonia - Nevermore - Caligula's Horse - Liquid Tension Experiment - Shadow Gallery - Vanden Plas - Transatlantic - and many more.
