the Real Vietnam: Legends, Volume 3: Vietnamese Folk Tales Retold — Eighteen Timeless Stories of Wit, Devotion, and Land That Remembers

Some silences last a lifetime. Some devotion becomes a mountain, a blossom, a bird's cry at dusk. Eighteen final Vietnamese folk tales, gathered and retold to close out this collection - stories that have traveled from grandmother to grandchild for generations, carried through pagoda gardens, coastal villages, and the quiet space between an old story and the person still listening to it. Inside, you'll meet the silent boy who rose only once, to save a kingdom, then asked for nothing but the sky to carry him home. The magistrate who wandered into an immortal realm and returned a hundred years too late. The small crab who keeps building against a tide that erases him every evening. A waterfall that still remembers two lovers who chose each other over an old family feud. Some of these tales are playful - a boy who outwits a king, a farmer who ties a tiger to a tree with nothing but rope and a straight face. Others carry a harder edge, toward grief, sacrifice, and the particular ache of loving something the world won't let you keep. All of them hold the same quiet truth: character reveals itself when it matters most, and the land remembers what people, in their hurry, sometimes forget. This is Volume 3, the final installment in the Real Vietnam: Legends series. Volumes 1 and 2 are also available - each collection stands complete on its own. Mr Giang retells the folk tales of Vietnam the way he first heard them - around family tables, from elders who believed these stories still had something to teach. He lives and writes independently, and considers every reader who picks up one of these tales part of the same fireside audience the stories were always meant for. Read slowly. This is the last one - let it settle before you close the book.
