This paper attempts, on the basis of an article in the journal *Blätter für literarische Unterhaltung* from 1836, to analyse the characteristics of the reception of Balzac's work, specifically at the moment when Balzac, with his novel *Le Père Goriot*, and in which he first employed the structural devices that characterise the 'Comédie humaine'. Detailed reviews of Balzac's works were extremely rare in the German press of the time, making this programmatic article, which deals with the two key works - 'Le Père Goriot' and 'Eugénie Grandet' - all the more significant.
