This book presents us with a selection of 125 masterpieces from the 15th and 16th centuries, from the works of quintessential Flemish and Italian masters, to examples that show the evolution of the art of engraving, from the medieval forms of Master E.S. whose motifs influenced sculpture and decorative arts, to the technical and stylistic innovations of Schongauer. Thus we can admire the works of the marvellous draughtsman Dürer, which were widely copied, of Cranach the Elder, of Altdorfer, one of the greatest German engravers, of Holbein the Younger, of Baldini, as well as of Mantegna. The subjects of these numerous images are characteristic of the Renaissance: scenes from the Old and New Testament, Greek and Roman mythology, and some scenes of daily life. The bold reproduction technique utilised in this book renders the engravers' works with remarkable precision.
