This book approaches the movement as a historical phenomenon in the development of modern academic thought, focusing on key issues in modern intellectual history such as why the movement erupted, what characterized its emergence, and what impact it brought about. The study argues that the most critical factor leading to the movement was the historical interpretation by the New Text School in the late Qing period, while the intricate intellectual and academic environment of the late Qing and early Republican era was particularly significant. Gu Jiegang's personal "daring breakthrough" acted as the catalyst for the movement.
