The popular science book *The Thorny Path to Political Pluralism, 1918-1920*, presented to the public by historian Lyatifa Mamedova, unearths profound layers of Russian history from the first quarter of the last century. The book is based on a solid, clearly and logically organized body of archival material. It also draws extensively on primary sources, including a number of periodicals from the period under discussion. From the archival collections, the author has retrieved what are practically the only copies in Azerbaijan of the newspapers *Vpered*-the organ of the Central Committee of the *Dashnaktsutyun* Party, published in Baku in 1918-1919- *Nashe Vremya*-the official publication of the Baku Armenian National Council in Baku. The book is based on historical documents and sources. It is intended for historians, political scientists, educators, and students, as well as the general public interested in the events that took place in Azerbaijan in the early 20th century.
