The political socialisation of young people is an indispensable process for a democratic system: various influential factors are intended to help young people develop into citizens capable of making political decisions. In the social sciences, political socialisation is a much-discussed topic. This paper examines the current state of research on the role of the media in the political socialisation of young people. The role of the media is compared with that of the family, peer groups and school. It is striking that there is no consensus on which factors play a role in 'political socialisation'. Generally speaking, it can be said that the media exert a far greater influence than the other socialising institutions. Research on schools and peer groups is contradictory and limited. Overall, there is a lack of up-to-date, comprehensive long-term studies on the political socialisation of young people.
