THE RUSSIAN TORTOISE HANDBOOK: Care, Nutrition, Health, Natural History, and Responsible Breeding

Russian tortoises are often sold as "easy" pets - and then their owners spend years piecing together conflicting advice from forums, pet stores, and outdated care sheets. Get the temperature wrong, the diet wrong, or miss an early sign of illness, and a species built to live for decades can suffer for years before anyone notices. The Russian Tortoise Handbook is a complete, evidence-based guide to keeping Testudo horsfieldii healthy from hatchling to adult - written to separate what's genuinely well established in veterinary and husbandry literature from what's still debated, so you know exactly how much to trust each recommendation. Inside, you'll learn: - How to build an enclosure that actually works - lighting, UVB (Ferguson zones explained), heat gradients, and substrate choices that support natural behavior instead of fighting it- What to feed and what to avoid - a practical, biology-first diet approach plus an alphabetical directory of safe and toxic plants- How to recognize illness early - a symptom finder and troubleshooting guide for the subtle signs tortoises are prone to hiding- How to manage brumation safely - when it's appropriate, how to prepare for it, and the seasonal checklist to reduce risk- Responsible breeding, start to finish - sexing, courtship, egg-laying, incubation and candling, hatching, and hand-rearing hatchlings through their first year- Quick-reference tools for the moments you need an answer fast - a care-at-a-glance chart, a seasonal maintenance calendar, and breeding troubleshooting referenceEvery recommendation is grounded in veterinary guidance, peer-reviewed research, and established husbandry practice - and where the science is still unsettled, the book says so, rather than passing along internet folklore as fact. A glossary and full reference list are included for readers who want to go deeper. Whether you're bringing home your first Russian tortoise or you've kept them for years and want a more rigorous reference, this handbook is built to be the one book on the shelf you actually trust.
