the Sciences of Democracies

An exploration of democracy and the methods we use to study it, this work surveys democratic variation across practices and institutions. The Sciences of the Democracies directly challenges the influential The Crisis of Democracy (1975) on its fiftieth anniversary, offering a fresh perspective on how democracies function and evolve. A collaborative project, it aims to capture breadth and diversity while proposing a new, holistic theory of democracy that integrates multiple modes of knowledge.

Contributors outline a holistic approach that draws on five sources: individual people, groups of people, non-textual media, texts, and non-humans. The result is an innovative account of democratic history that doubles as a practical guide for future democracy scholars, illustrating how diverse evidence can illuminate democratic processes.
