If Jesus Christ returned to earth today, not in glory on the clouds, but quietly as a man seeking baptism, would He recognize the church that bears His name? I am not the first to ask this question. Every generation of Christians must ask it. But I fear we have stopped asking. We have become comfortable. We have assumed that whatever our church teaches must be right not because it is true, but because it is ours, because it is old, because it is large, because it is sincere. But sincerity is not the same as truth. The Pharisees were sincere. They prayed, they fasted, they tithed. And Jesus said to them: "You have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition." (Matthew 15:6)
