The Sentence After

Prison gave Nathan Mercer a release date. The rest of his sentence didn't come with one.At twenty-six, Nathan enters a California prison carrying a felony conviction, a wrecked marriage, damaged relationships, and a long history of believing he could talk his way around consequences.Inside Delano, there is nowhere left to run.Between steel doors, prison routines, unlikely friendships, letters to his mother, and promises to the children he failed to be there for, Nathan becomes convinced he can build a different life. And eventually, he does.Years after his release, he has become an environmental compliance professional trusted across twenty facilities. He has certifications, responsibility, a high-rise apartment overlooking Los Angeles, and a senior position being created around work he is already doing. Then a background review finds the one credential he can never remove.Felony conviction. In a matter of words on a screen, the man Nathan has spent more than a decade becoming is forced to compete with the man described in an old court file. What follows is not simply a story about prison. It is about what happens after the gate opens-when redemption collides with background checks, employment decisions, family wounds, anger, memory, and a world that may never agree that a person has changed.Sharp, darkly funny, intimate, and unsentimental, The Sentence After is a novel inspired by true events about accountability, second chances, and the difficult truth that freedom is not the moment your past disappears. It is the moment you stop letting it decide what you do next.By P.D.P.
