The Shovel

The shovel was never really about the shovel. At fifteen years old, Dustin Oehler's life changed in an instant. Pulled out of class, driven to a run-down farm at the end of a dead-end road, and told simply, "We are here" - he had no idea that a rusted shovel lying in the dirt would become the starting point for everything he would learn about responsibility, resilience, and leadership. The Shovel is a raw, honest memoir about growing up fast - mending fences, learning hard truths, and holding the rope when no one else would - and carrying those lessons into a career spent leading people, managing failure, and rebuilding after setbacks. This isn't a polished leadership textbook. It's a real story about: - Learning responsibility before you're ready - and what that teaches you decades later- The cost of closed doors - and the leaders who choose to open them instead- Recognizing warning signs - in business, in people, and in yourself- Looking in the mirror - the hardest and most important leadership skill there isTold through vivid personal stories and hard-won lessons, The Shovel speaks to anyone who has faced failure, been handed more responsibility than they felt ready for, or had to rebuild something - a career, a team, or themselves - from the ground up.If you're a new manager, a leader who's failed and is figuring out what comes next, or someone who believes the best lessons in life rarely come easy, The Shovel will feel like it was written for you.
