An ex-convict at the age of 24, Ellis X lives as a homeless person on the streets of NYC. Two years in prison for breaking and entering has left him a changed man. Unable to abide humanity, with no home, family, or friends, no name he wants to remember, Ellis sleeps in the bushes of Central Park at night, and earns money hunting for books and other saleable items in the trash. His only friends are several pigeons he comes to know. Everything changes when a man in white enters the park one day and scatters what looks like bits of corn. In fact it's the poison Avitrol-the man is a serial bird-killer. That day he kills all of Ellis' friends, along with many other birds. A month later Ellis spots the man on a subway platform, and follows him...
