The Stick Girl, a very thin young woman walks past the neighborhood children each morning as they wait at the school bus stop. At first, some of the children laugh at her unusual appearance, but the Stick Girl always responds with kindness. Over time, she gently teaches the children to notice the small wonders around them... ladybugs crawling across leaves, birds building nests, and sunlight glistening on spider webs. When the children finally ask why she is so thin, the Stick Girl quietly reveals that she is ill and wears her whimsical hats to cover her head. Then one day the Stick Girl no longer comes to the bus stop. The children are saddened but slowly realize the lasting gift she has given them: the ability to see the world with greater wonder, compassion, and empathy.
