27 per cent of adults in the European Union suffer from a mental health condition at least once in their lifetime. By 2020, depression will be the second most common condition in industrialised countries. Mental health conditions are among the main causes of long-term sick leave within the European Union. This trend cannot be countered by medical intervention alone. This book examines the general developments taking place in the field of psychiatry and what this specifically means for outpatient care. The profession of social work is becoming increasingly important in terms of maintaining and promoting health. The focus is on examining the systemic approach in the field of clinical social work and, finally, on exploring its possibilities and limitations on the path towards improving psychiatric care within a constantly changing society.
