The Thirteen Reckonings of Sophie Marchetti is a novel about theft dressed up as generosity, about the particular danger of being told you are extraordinary by someone who needs you to believe it, and about the slow, unglamorous work of counting your way back to the surface one true sentence at a time. Its shape owes a quiet debt to the Pistis Sophia, the old Gnostic account of a fallen aeon who repents her way home through a series of numbered reckonings of her own. Sophie's version has no gods in it, only a bar, a notebook, and the people who never once needed her to be extraordinary to love her.
