Bol Surrender to God is not the surrender of the will. On Mount Kuling in the early 1930s, believers gather seeking a deeper spiritual life while carrying a subtler danger within themselves: the human will can rule independently through self-effort, or collapse into passivity and call that surrender. These twelve historical parables follow the imagined lives of ordinary workers, servants, and saints as fear, impressions, mental passivity, false crosses, self-directed service, anxious reasoning, and exhausted determination expose the difference between natural willpower and a will renewed and yielded under God. The problem is not that the believer has a will. The problem is what governs it. A strong will may insist upon its own way and then baptize determination as faith. A weakened will may withdraw from responsibility and mistake inertia for trust. Both leave the throne occupied by something other than the active obedience God desires. Again and again, the characters must learn that surrender does not mean becoming passive, thoughtless, or unable to choose. It means relinquishing self-rule while recovering the will as a living faculty capable of faith, obedience, resistance, and deliberate cooperation with God. The deepest question is therefore not simply whether we are willing, but what has taken the throne of choice within us. Will the will rule independently, collapse into passivity, or become an active instrument yielded to God? The Throne of Choice is Volume Five of The House-to-House Chronicles: Parables of the Little Flock.
