Terms such as 'disruption', 'digital transformation' and the significance of Silicon Valley - and, more importantly, the employment and technological paradigms emerging there - were not yet on everyone's lips in October 2009, the year this text was written, nor were they buzzwords to which everyone reacted instinctively. But the entertainment industry has heralded the digital transformation. From the financial sector to the automotive industry, the signs are changing, business models are changing, and sometimes the very scale of the industries is shifting. Those who fail to adapt will be left behind economically and sink into irrelevance. The German consumer electronics sector has already demonstrated this. The legal challenges are immense. Big Data is a discipline in its own right within information technology, and the first professionally trained data analysts are now entering the workforce. Until 2015, we were busy collecting data; now it is time for analysis. Virtually every household appliance collects user data; virtually every corporation links its data to user profiles; and Google and Facebook can predict behaviour more accurately than humans.
