This is Elizabeth Burgess's second children's book. It is primarily intended for boys from 6 to 12, but boys younger would enjoy it also. Girls from 6 to 12 might also enjoy the story. It speaks to sportsmanship. When an adult at a turkey shoot loses his temper because he did not win and an 11-year-old boy wins, he ruins the day for his son and the winner, Stone. This is a good opportunity for young readers to explore life in rural North Carolina during 1950s and to see what a turkey shoot is like. When Stone gets home with his turkey, there is more drama with his mother and the turkey he named Leroy.
