With the aim of reaffirming the purposes and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and to reaffirm the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With the aim of also reaffirming the Democratic Republic of the Congo's sovereignty over its natural resources, the UN has committed to maintaining peace and has deployed a mission to the DRC. MONUC, now MONUSCO, is currently engaged in peacekeeping operations and is taking action on the ground to protect civilians. It is in this context that this study analyzes the role played by MONUC (now MONUSCO) in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts between the warring parties, with a view to enabling the organization of free, democratic, and transparent elections in 2006. We also analyze the role played by the Mission in organizing the constitutional referendum. This study focuses on the national presidential and legislative elections and provides information on the geographical location of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
