This book provides a new perspective on the history of the United States from the eighteenth to the middle of the twenty-first century. This book provides a new perspective on the history of the United States from the eighteenth to early twenty-first century. It brings together 15 chapters that engage with the changing contour of the United States, its changing political culture, and its internal and international politics, and provides a critique of its democracy. It focuses on marginalized social groups – indigenous tribes, indentured labor, slaves, and immigrants – to understand their role and contributions in the making of the United States. The book examines gender roles, class, race, ethnicity and the movements for rights that heralded the beginning of a new political agenda, viz. the mobilization of African-Americans, the Civil Rights Movement, the Feminist Movement, and New Environmentalism.
