the Unutterable Beauty - Collected Poetry of G. A. Studdert Kennedy: WW1 War Poet Woodbine Willie Poems from Trenches First World

Known to a generation of soldiers as "Woodbine Willie," G. A. Studdert Kennedy was the British army chaplain who handed out cigarettes and Christ in the trenches of the First World War. His poetry is as raw, compassionate, and unflinching as the man himself. This collection brings together many of his most powerful poems: the famous war poems that still stop readers in their tracks, the powerful meditations on a suffering God, the fierce social critiques, the tender lyrics of love and loss, and the unforgettable dialect poems spoken in the voices of ordinary soldiers. Here is faith that has looked into the face of horror and refused to look away. Here is a God who does not sit remote on a throne of power, but hangs, broken and bleeding, on a Cross. Here is beauty wrung from mud, blood, and the stubborn hope that love will have the final word.First published in 1927 and never surpassed, The Unutterable Beauty remains one of the most moving and honest collections of Christian poetry of the twentieth century.
