The Use of Ethanol as a Fuel and Substitute for MTBE

The ever-increasing demand for petroleum products-used primarily in Algeria's transportation sector-and their growing impact on the environment lead us to wonder what the country's energy future will look like, given a steadily expanding vehicle fleet and an increasingly limited fuel supply due to declining reserves. Algeria already imports nearly 20% of its fuels, partly because its refining capacity is insufficient. Furthermore, as gasoline becomes increasingly high-performance, it is necessary to add additives to replace the hazardous tetraethyl lead. In this study, with the aim of improving the quantity and quality of fuels, we propose to examine the use of ethanol as a renewable fuel and as an additive and substitute for either Pb(C¿H¿)¿ or methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). The goal is to save financial resources by increasing the octane rating through this addition, while also protecting the environment by using a low-CO2-emission energy source.
