His 1819 short story, 'The Vampyre', is widely accepted as the first vampire story ever written. Aubrey, an orphaned young gentleman who is in possession of a small fortune, arrives in London where he comes into contact with the mysterious Lord Ruthven. Aubrey befriends Lord Ruthven and when he discovers that Lord Ruthven is planning a European trip he decides to travel with him.
