the Voices in Mist

In the novel, The Voices in the Mist by Wambua Sirman, Lita was once the fierce chairlady of a women's cooperative and a bold village pastor, enduring the blistering heat of Africa's semi-arid lowlands. Alongside her family, she dug for minerals, hauling wheelbarrows for two dollars a turn to keep her five children alive after the local economy collapsed. But when the mines were shut down and her church failed to capture the spirit of the valley, the weight of poverty and humiliation broke her. She fled back to the high ridges, leaving behind a husband drowning his sorrows in the coastal slums of Kisiwa city. Desperate to erase the stains of her past, Lita reinvents herself. Dressed in vibrant silks bought with her children's urban remittances, she catches the eye of a wealthy retired clerk and steps into a life of quiet comfort. The price of her new security? Complete erasure. When her old friends call from the dry lands, Lita pretends not to recognize them, cloaking her shame in a fog of selective amnesia. Even her youngest daughter, Tila, vanishes into the mist of an abusive underage marriage, abandoned by a mother who refuses to look back. But the past is not buried; it is merely waiting. When her resilient son, Meda, beats the odds to build a modern stone estate on the family plot, he sets out to claim a bride from the very lowlands his mother fled. To secure his future, Meda demands the impossible: his scattered, broken parents must stand together at the traditional dowry table. Forced out of hiding, Lita must confront the women she betrayed, the daughter she abandoned, and the husband she left behind. The Voices in the Mist is a sweeping, emotionally searing saga of pride, family restoration, and the unyielding gravity of the soil we come from. It is a powerful testament to the fact that no matter how far we run into the mist, the voices of our roots will always find a way home.
