Mara Vale does not need miracles. She needs food in the cupboards, rent paid, and her children to stop pretending they are not hungry. Then she buys a second-hand washing machine that does the impossible. For six days, the hunger disappears from her house. Her children eat. They sleep. They laugh. But hunger does not vanish. It travels. As neighbours weaken and the machine's rule becomes impossible to ignore, Mara must decide how much comfort one family is allowed to take from everyone else. Every hunger removed must be carried somewhere.
