You picked up this book because you suspect you have been spending your life on too many things, none of them mastered. This is the central failure of most modern men. They have many interests. They develop competence at a few of them. They never master any. They live their lives at the level of dabblers - comfortable in the shallows of many disciplines, never having gone deep in any. They do not know what mastery feels like, because they have not done the work that produces it. Their lives have variety but not depth. Musashi spent his life going deep in one thing. The sword. From age thirteen to his death at around sixty-one, he practiced the sword. He thought about the sword. He fought with the sword. He taught the sword. He wrote about the sword. Forty-eight years of continuous engagement with a single discipline. He developed, in the course of that engagement, an understanding of the sword that no one else of his era - possibly no one before or since - has matched. But here is the point. The sword was not, for Musashi, only the sword. It was the path through which he came to understand everything else. Strategy. Psychology. Painting. Calligraphy. Sculpture. Carpentry. Architecture. He became accomplished in several of these - he was a working painter and sculptor in his later years, and his surviving works are in major Japanese museums - not because he diversified his attention but because he had gone deep enough in one thing that he understood the principles, and the principles transferred. This is one of his core teachings. The man who masters one thing learns how to master anything. The man who has only dabbled in many things has not learned how to master one thing, and so cannot transfer anything. Modern culture pushes you in the wrong direction. It rewards visible variety. It celebrates the man with many interests. It treats specialization as narrowing, dabbling as cultivation. The Musashi alternative is countercultural and harder. Pick one thing. Go deep. Stay with it long enough that you have actually mastered it. Then watch what happens to the rest of your capacities - they will, in unexpected ways, improve.
