Bol Hamid Touati wanted fifty people. A nice meal. One night. His mother Yemma Hadda had three hundred and twelve people to invite. The number that eventually appeared was four hundred and sixty. The wedding began on a Thursday in Aïn El Assel, a small town in the hills of eastern Algeria where everyone is related to everyone else and nobody leaves before they're ready. By Friday, the guests hadn't gone home. By Monday, more had arrived. By the second week, the wedding had stopped being a wedding and had become something else. A Gathering that built its own kitchen system, its own music rotation, its own street table that seated a hundred people every morning, and its own quiet logic for why leaving was not yet the right thing to do. Thirty-six days. One wedding. A town that found itself.
