Grimsby is not on the sill. He hasn't spoken in six weeks, the apartment has dropped three degrees, and the dwarven floor tiles are glowing an amber their engineer can only describe as MISSING. Aldric Fumblewick, a Second Class wizard and holder of more paperwork than any one man should own, would like to report his cat missing. The Wizard's Guild would like him to report it to the Livestock Division. Aldric would like to respond with a two-page essay titled Reasons Grimsby Is Not, Under Any Interpretation, Livestock. Meanwhile his dragon wife keeps setting out a third saucer nobody will touch, his foster daughter Pyrra keeps saying "Not," and a melted postbox on Bellham Street has started delivering letters to a woman who died decades ago. With a knight who invents forms the way other people give hugs, an eight-hundred-year-old dragon scholar courting her one ink color at a time, and a fish sent by crystal-mail, Aldric is about to learn that some cats can't be found. They have to be asked.
